ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to examine the effect of group cognitive-behavioral therapy (GCBT) on pathological internet use (PIU). Method The study applied a group randomized controlled trial design to assign participants to intervention and control groups. A total of 40 college students aged 18 to 30 who were pathological internet users (PIUs) participated in this study and were randomly assigned to treatment and control groups. Participants completed a self-report scale entitled the Problematic Internet Use Scale (PIUS) at three time points. The intervention lasted 8 weeks. The data collected were statistically analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results The results showed that GCBT has significant efficacy, decreasing the symptoms of PIU among the GCBT participants compared to those in the control group and that the improvements were maintained at follow-up. We also found a significant interaction effect by time for PIU. Conclusion From the study findings, we can conclude that GCBT has significant benefit for mitigating the severity of PIU in college students. Therefore, mental health professionals are encouraged to explore the benefits of GCBT in treating symptoms associated with PIU in school settings and beyond.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a systematic review of extant research investigating the effectiveness of Internet-based group cognitive behavioral therapy (IGCBT) for depression and anxiety symptoms with an emphasis on the treatment modalities, treatment protocols, efficacy and mechanism, together with a summary of research limitations and suggestions for future research. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a structured, short-term and present-oriented psychotherapeutic treatment, its Internet- and group-delivered modalities have led to its wider application, and has proven to be clinically effective in alleviating depression and anxiety symptoms caused by different diseases, whereas some drawbacks have been reported. Thus this paper elaborates the clinical application, therapeutic effect and underlying mechanisms of IGCBT intervention for depression and anxiety symptoms, so as to provide references for its future application. ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of group cognitive-behavioral therapy (GCBT) for the treatment of adolescents with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Methods: This review was registered in PROSPERO under number CRD42020158475. Five databases (PubMed, Virtual Health Library, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO) were searched. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 13 studies were analyzed in the qualitative synthesis (i.e., systematic review) and eight in the quantitative synthesis (i.e., meta-analysis). For the latter, fixed-effect modeling was used to assess the primary outcome (i.e., OCD symptoms). Results: The main findings suggest that GCBT is effective in reducing the symptoms of OCD in adolescents (d = -1.32). However, these results must be interpreted with caution, since all of the included studies showed some bias in their design. Conclusions: GCBT is effective in reducing OCD symptoms in adolescents.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the efficacy of group cognitive-behavioral therapy(GCBT) for diabetic patients with anxiety and depression. Methods In this randomized control study, 42 patients was recruited for treatment of diabetes and allocated them in a randomized manner (1:1) into two groups to receive either 10-weeks GCBT plus regular education or regular education alone.Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS), and fasting blood glucose were measured and evaluated before and after treatment. Results After 10 weeks of intervention, the total scores of HAMD, HAMA, and SDS were significantly decreased.Compared with the control group, repeated measures of ANOVA revealed a significant group-by-time interaction(F=6.801, 10.30, 5.02, P=0.013, 0.003, 0.031).The difference of HAMD was negatively correlated with disease duration and education (r=-0.486, -0.541, P=0.030, 0.014), and the difference of SDS was obviously correlated with gender, as the SDS score of women decreased more significantly (r=0.582, P=0.007). Conclusion Group cognitive-behavioral therapy can help to improve the mood of diabetic patients with anxiety and depression, rehabilitating their social function and life quality.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The overuse of the Internet among adolescents has increased dramatically in recent years, leading to pathological or problematic Internet use. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is known to be effective for the treatment of problematic Internet use, particularly for adolescents. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of group CBT for problematic Internet use in adolescents. METHODS: A total of 17 patients aged 12–17 years who met Young's diagnostic questionnaire criteria of problematic Internet use participated in a school-based eight-session group CBT program. The level of problematic Internet use among participating students was measured using Young's Internet Addiction Scale (IAS). Depression and anxiety levels were evaluated using the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), respectively. Each construct was assessed at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and at a one-month follow-up visit. Statistical significance was based on a p-value of < 0.05. RESULTS: Immediately after the program, the IAS, CDI, and State Anxiety Inventory (SAI) scores were significantly lower than before the program. At the one-month follow-up assessment, the IAS scores remained low, and the CDI and SAI scores were even lower than immediately after the program. CONCLUSION: Group CBT was effective for adolescents with problematic Internet use, and was also demonstrated to improve depression and anxiety.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACTBACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Group cognitive-behavioral therapy has shown to be effective for chronic pain management in the international literature. However, the need to bring evidence-based practices to health services requires that therapies like this are implemented and evaluated in Brazil. This study has not intended to evaluate the efficacy of group cognitive-behavioral therapy for chronic pain adult patients, but rather to identify how studies in this area are being performed by Brazilian investigators.CONTENTS:A search was carried out about Brazilian studies published in the last two decades (1994-2014), evaluating the efficacy of group cognitive-behavioral therapy for adults with non-malignant chronic pain. Health Virtual Library databases were used and search terms were: Chronic pain “and” Psychology “or” Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Evaluated variables were clinical and socio-demographic characteristics, pre and post-intervention evaluation tools, sessions' structure (sessions number and duration), primary results, and evaluation of the quality of studies by means of the PEDro scale.CONCLUSION:Six out of 816 articles available were selected for analysis, because they were the only ones to meet chosen search criteria. One should stress the scarcity of Brazilian studies in the area, the use of exclusively subjective evaluations aimed at unidimensional pain aspects, and the concern with the methodological quality of studies, especially with regard to internal validity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive behavioral therapy for treatment of schizophrenia was designed as a psychological therapy for treatment of drug resistant patients with schizophrenia. This therapy is currently being widely applied from early psychosis to chronic condition. The aim of this article is to review the main results of research articles on cognitive behavioral therapy of schizophrenia and prompt practicing the therapy in Korean mental health services. METHODS: The important original and review articles were referred in order to understand the main results of research from published international books, and the English website Pubmed was searched in order to update recent findings. This article reviewed the results of four areas of different phases and types of cognitive behavioral therapy for treatment of schizophrenia: drug resistant chronic patients, acute psychotic state, prodromal phase, and group cognitive behavioral therapy. RESULTS: Cognitive behavioral therapy for treatment of drug resistant patients with schizophrenia can attenuate the positive and general symptoms more than that for patients who receive supportive psychotherapy or treatment as usual. However, the effect appears to be less than previously expected, small to moderate. Cognitive behavioral therapy for patients of acute psychotic state can reduce the time of recovery from acute psychotic symptoms by approximately 25%. The result of cognitive behavioral therapy for patients of prodromal phase shows that the therapy can reduce the rate of transition to schizophrenia by up to one third. Group behavioral therapy has recently been tested. Group therapists have suggested that the therapy should be applied through the way of groups with relatively homogenous symptoms. However, whether the therapy can reduce the severity of hallucination in the voice hearer group is inconclusive. CONCLUSION: Alongside pharmacotherapy for treatment of schizophrenia, cognitive behavioral therapy is a distinct psychological therapy for attenuation of psychotic symptoms. The effect of cognitive behavioral therapy appears to last for one year and requires additional therapeutic sessions after one year. The effect is not still clear in group cognitive behavioral therapy for treatment of schizophrenia. Cognitive behavioral therapy for treatment of schizophrenia should be practiced widely in the Korean mental health system.
